Golf is a great way to catch up with family and friends. Whether you are new to the sport or an old pro, there is something for every level of play - practice at the driving range or take on the challenges of some of our more advanced courses. What better way to relax on vacation than to hit the links? If you are looking to golf in Lancaster, PA, we have plenty of places for you to choose from at various price points. Rick Marts is a golf enthusiast who lives in East Marlborough Township. As part of your planning during this time, please call or check the website & social media of these properties for their most current operational information. However, while the snack bar can easily accommodate your hunger, don’t expect the diverse cuisine and pub-like dining facilities of other clubs I have reviewed in this space.Īs for tee times, membership opportunities, leagues, green fees, specific directions and green fees, please go online to The Web site will also list weekday, weekend, senior, junior, twilight, time of year and other factors that might affect the rate that would apply to you. When you come to play, come to practice as well on the full driving range, chipping area with sand bunker and practice putting green. He said, “The distance is doable at 4,921 yards, and we have added three new ladies tees with three more in the works.” He also said the Lancaster City-County Golf Association thinks enough of the course to hold its annual better-ball tournament at Pilgrim’s Oak. Kurtz also believes the course is very lady-friendly. So taking a cart is probably wise the fee is only $14, unless you are in good shape. Distances from green to tee are not long but it’s hilly.”Īnd on the weekend no discount is offered to walkers before 2 p.m. Now you see why the slope is 146.Ĭan Pilgrim’s Oak be walked? Kurtz answered, “Yes. Number 11, for example, has the golfer teeing off from a precipice into a valley-like fairway only to face a nearly blind second shot to an extremely elevated and small green. At times, this is problematic because several holes have substantial elevation changes a la Augusta National. The greens are small and many are elevated with drop-offs around the sides and rear. Speaking of the greens, although Donald Ross did not design Pilgrim’s Oak, his influence is evident. With the creek, pond and wetlands between the tee and the front of the green and a forbidding hazard immediately behind the green, virtually no bailout area exists. For example, water is the highlight on Pilgrim’s Oak’s signature hole, number 12, which is a par 3 measuring 183 yards from the blue tee box. At least two small creeks meander through the links-style layout, and they seem to morph from creeks into sizable ponds in the most inopportune spots, often right in front of a green. On about one-third of the holes, golfers need to deal with a significant water feature. The water is well, the water could be a problem. The sand traps could have been in better shape, but the good news is that with only 36 traps-two per hole-you shouldn’t be overly bothered by them. I found nearly immaculate greens and fairways, a through-the-roof “interest factor,” and frequent vistas of neighboring dairy farms and Pennsylvania landscapes. Steve Kurtz, the director of golf, said, “Although the property used to be a dairy farm, it is now the only Golf Digest four-star public golf course in Lancaster County.”Īnd the conditions verified that rating. Having played the course in the past, I knew what I was going to see during my tour, but I didn’t know how nice it would be. In fact, Alan Dinning, a member of my neighborhood’s group of about 30 senior golfers, told me, “Pilgrim’s Oak is one of our favorite venues.” On the other hand, the course is very fair and playable-very little tall fescue lays in wait to gobble up your ball, the rough is mowed low so you can reach greens from it, and you’ll find the course length is reasonable. Remember, nationwide, a slope of around 115 is average (one source says 113, one says 118.5, go figure). Slope ratings from the other tee boxes are also high: Blue-139, White-130, Gold-122 and Red-122. With a shuddering slope rating of 146 from the tips, Pilgrim’s Oak is not for the faint-hearted. It’s easy to find: south on Route 1 about 20 miles to northwest on Route 272 until you see the sign for the course.īut please come prepared to be challenged. And isn’t that what a golf experience should be?The course is located in the rolling hills and dairy farm country of southern Lancaster County, about 40 minutes from Kennett Square. Instead, every hole is unique and memorable. Pilgrim’s Oak is not one of those courses where the holes run back and forth along side each other like opposite sides of Interstate 95.

The first vote came two days after Landry sent a letter urging the bond commission to "defer any applications for the City of New Orleans, Orleans Parish, and any local governmental entity or political subdivision under its purview." Just two members of the commission-both designees of Edwards-supported a motion to approve funding for the project in question without delay last month, while 12 members voted to block it. Thursday's close vote followed Landry's overwhelming victory at the July 21 meeting. "Today was another step toward ensuring the parishes and municipalities of our state comply with the laws of our state." "The officials in New Orleans took an oath of office to support and enforce the laws of our state, yet they have decided that some laws are not worthy of enforcement," Landry said on Facebook after the vote. The bond commission on Thursday voted 7-6 to defer a motion to approve flood prevention funding until next month, threatening the future well-being of Orleans Parish residents whose elected leaders are attempting to defy the cruel and dangerous forced pregnancy bill passed by Louisiana Republicans and signed into law by Democratic Gov. Wade and is currently in force following multiple legal challenges. Supreme Court's far-right majority overturned Roe v. The New Orleans City Council on July 7 passed a resolution in which local policymakers proclaimed their support for reproductive healthcare access and asked police, sheriff's deputies, and prosecutors not to use public money to enforce Louisiana's draconian prohibition on abortion, which took effect just days after the U.S. Trump was impeached for conduct like this. This is blackmail, not ordinary politics. I don’t think we’re responding with the urgency these authoritarian moves deserve. Maximum cargo space is up by a few cubic feet (to 60) with the rear seats folded. The second-row seats now slide fore and aft a few inches and also are adjustable for recline. At least the Q5’s brake-pedal feel and stopping performance (161 feet from 70 mph) are top-notch for the class.Īudi has wisely chosen to sacrifice a bit of cargo space to improve rear-seat legroom in the new model. It also makes the Q5 feel slightly unsettled on the expressway as its nose seems to drift to and fro with nary a murmur through the steering wheel. It’s accurate, and its 15.8:1 ratio is quick enough, but it is so utterly devoid of feel that not only is the “sporty characteristics of a sedan” descriptor revealed as bogus, even non-enthusiast drivers might be put off by the artificiality of the steering. This is the kind of steering that gives electrically assisted systems a bad name. A large part of the problem is the steering system. The Q5 feels refined to the point of flavorlessness. But the coil springs, the fixed-rate dampers, and the rest of the suspension are tuned to deliver a well-controlled ride, free of float, while rounding the edges off sharp impacts, even with the Q5 wearing the optional 20-inch wheels.īut a lack of floppiness does not a sporty vehicle make. The system operates seamlessly and is credited by Audi with helping deliver the new model’s 3-mpg improvement in city fuel economy. Like the A4 Allroad’s, the Q5’s all-wheel drive is an on-demand system called Quattro with Ultra, meaning that it’s a front-wheel-drive vehicle most of the time. Yes, the Q5 comes with an off-road setting, accessible through its Drive Select mode toggler, which locks the drivetrain into all-wheel drive. There are more-distinctive-looking crossover options out there, from the edgy Cadillac XT5 to the grotesque Lexus RX.Ĭrowd pleaser: Like other new Audis, the Q5's instrument panel can be configured to display Google Earth or Google Street View. The Q5, like the BMW X3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC300, is pleasantly inoffensive, soft in shape and in impact. It’s 10 pounds heavier than the old one-that’s the equivalent of 10 pounds of feathers or rocks or grape-flavored Pez-and a closer look reveals a couple of new curves above the wheels, a lazy rolling wave along the sides of the thing. At a glance, the ’18 Q5 is the same vehicle, the new model being within an inch of the vehicle it replaces in every major dimension. This includes a new generation of Audi’s familiar turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, now making 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, plus a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic in place of the last Q5’s eight-speed conventional automatic and an all-new platform that integrates more aluminum bits.īut like the recently renewed A4 and A4 Allroad, the Q5 is a very familiar all-new car. For 2018, the Q5 gets not only a new suit of clothes but its first full reworking in the model’s nine-year history. I hope you found these free printable rulers useful! They are a quick and easy alternative for when you don’t have a physical ruler on hand. If you don’t just want a disposable ruler, you can easily laminate them or print them on thick cardstock to make them more durable. Just because these are paper rulers doesn’t mean they are a one-time-use ruler. You can use these centimeter and inch rulers for sewing projects too. Use a ruler print out at home or in your classroom to help kids and young children with their studies, math, craft activities, and much more. I recommend printing the paper rulers on a nice cardstock for sturdiness and durability.

Well, he didn't say what languages they'll be but we can all keep our fingers crossed and watch this inspiring young man as he continues to break new grounds.Classic never goes out of fashion. But even that is not enough, Anthony says he intends to travel the world with his son and, perhaps, learn three languages in the process. You'll see him every other day posing for photographs with his son at fun spots. Although his business is demanding, he always finds time for family. On a personal note, Anthony Farrer has continued to make up for lost times with his son. So that wherever you are in the country or even in the world, you can say, 'Yes, I got this through a Gentleman Timepieces agent and I'm sure of the authenticity', you know," he added. "We want to build a community in the wristwatch industry. By establishing reliable and safe delivery channels to several parts of the world, I believe we can truly become a global force in the industry and serve people in other countries and regions", he enthused.īefore going global, Anthony says they must go beyond a team and grow into a community a chain of dealers spread across the country and other parts of the world, promoting the brand and values of Gentleman Timepieces. There's no part of the world that we cannot reach. "The Internet and social media have created endless possibilities in business. But for Anthony, the goal is to go global. Gentleman Timepieces is already a household name within the wristwatch ecosystem in the United States. Delegating important tasks further enhances that sense of responsibility and belonging that every employee desires. Those are the three key components that got him this far and he intends to drive that culture into the very fabric of the entire team at Gentleman Timepieces. Realizing that achieving a vision requires getting the team on board, Anthony Farrer is building a culture of passion, service and resilience among his employees. There's no reason why he can't build a $100 million dollar empire from $10 million. Think about it he built a $10 million dollar business from nothing in three years. Maybe for some it's a tall dream, too big to achieve, but when it comes to achieving the unthinkable, no one quite does it better than the Timepiece Gentleman. I guess you can say we trust in ourselves and what we do and we believe the public trusts us as well based on our track record, so we believe we can do this," he adds. "We know how ambitious that is, but that is how much we're willing to push ourselves. "We're looking at building a $100 million dollar business in the next three years," he said during a recent interview. While it took him just three years to build a 7-figure business, Anthony Farrer is setting new goals for himself and his team. Both as a businessman and a proud young father, Anthony says there's still a lot more to do. Although he has built a multi-million dollar business, grossing $10 million within three years, the Timepiece Gentleman is not resting on his oars. He had nothing but a record, but he also had passion, resilience, and a desire to succeed. Today, he is the proud owner of Gentleman Timepieces, a company he built from scratch. Poor boy from Sherman, Texas raised by foster parents, became an alcoholic as a teenager, convicted twice for multiple DUIs, lost his twin brother to drunk driving and missed the birth of his son because he was on his way to prison, Anthony is one of the few who have defied the script based on what he has done with his life. Someone who truly understands this philosophy is one you probably know as the Timepiece Gentleman, Anthony William Farrer. However, growing and striving to be better shouldn't be a competition with anyone else but yourself let each day be better than the last. The cycle seen in fiber optics and dot-coms in the 1990s and the early part of this decade-a burst of frantic building and excess capacity, outlandish hype, and cutthroat price competition, bankruptcy and consolidation, self-pity and finger-pointing, short-term losses for many and long-term gains for everybody-is nothing new. How much cash do corporations save each year due to falling data transmission and storage costs? What's the value of the time saved-and hence money earned-from instant messaging, file sharing, BlackBerrys, the online phone service Skype, ordering groceries online through Peapod, using Google to conduct research, and outsourcing insurance claims processing to Bangalore? In the years since the bubble burst in 2000, the way Americans work and communicate has changed dramatically, in large part because the technological infrastructure laid down in the 1990s has been put to such remarkable use. Next, add the macroeconomic numbers that are more difficult to crunch. There's much more to the Web 2.0 phenomenon than Google and YouTube: the virtual universe Second Life Wi-Fi networks the burgeoning blogging industry iTunes the $211.4 billion e-commerce juggernaut, growing at 20 percent per year and the $16 billion online advertising industry. Without near-universal broadband (ever try streaming a video over a 56K dial-up modem?) and the spread of what Forbes publisher Rich Karlgaard calls the continuing "cheap revolution" in technology, teens would not be able to make videos on their PCs and digital cameras, upload them to the Net quickly, and post links on their MySpace pages. YouTube, which went from zero to 100 million videos per day in the time it takes an infant to learn to walk, was likewise built on infrastructure laid down in the 1990s. Web surfers, many whom enjoyed zippy broadband connections by selling ads to hundreds of thousands of online advertisers desperate for leads, links, and clicks and by placing ads on blogs and social networking sites. Google prospered by hiring engineers and computer scientists, many of whom had been made redundant after the bust by lashing together hundreds of thousands of cheap servers by tapping into an installed base of 172 million U.S. It had about $9.8 billion in cash and marketable securities on its balance sheet.īut all that code would have been worthless if not for the excess human and technological capacity surrounding the Internet that was created in the 1990s. And while the company used about 2 percent of its high-flying stock as currency, Google could have simply written a check. The stock market valued Google that day at about $128 billion-more than it did most components of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Superior search algorithms account for Google's astonishing performance and profitability. Google, the dork-powered cream of the Web 2.0 crop, was founded in 1998, gained critical mass amid the postbust tristesse, went public in August 2004, and instantly took flight. Rather, it was a logical and historically resonant result of the 1990s bubble. Could Google's billion-dollar purchase of YouTube signal another dot-com boom?"ĭespite the media's rush to portray the deal as a return to the glory days of 1999, before Lauer's hairline and CNBC's ratings had receded so dramatically, the Google-YouTube tie-up emphatically did not herald a return of the dot-com bubble. Less astute deal observer Matt Lauer seconded the notion, opening the October 11 Today show with this irresistible teaser: "Bubblicious. "It sounds like a tale from the late 1990's dot-com bubble," wrote astute deal observer Andrew Ross Sorkin in the New York Times. (Google's stock rose 8.5 points on the news, creating enough new value to make the transaction essentially free.) The rumors and gossip surrounding the acquisition target's also-ran peers, like Facebook. (YouTube held its financials closely but loudly trumpeted the 100 million videos viewed daily at the site.) The positive reaction in the stock market. A young tech company using its high-flying stock to snarf up, at a seemingly outrageous valuation, a company with little revenues but gazillions of eyeballs. Google, the eight-year-old money machine, announced it would buy YouTube, the eighteen-month-old Web video-sharing phenomenon, for $1.65 billion in stock. On October 9, 2006, with the Dow hovering near a record 12,000, the markets got a jolt. |
